Under general supervision of the Director for Career Center within the Division of Student Affairs, the Career Counselor/Advisor performs highly complex professional student services work and work to serve all CSUSB students with their career counseling/ advising needs. The Career Counselor/Adviser is assigned to work in partnership with a partner College at CSUSB (e.g. College of Arts & Letters, College of Education, College of Natural Sciences, College of Social and Behavioral Studies, Jack Brown College of Business, Interdisciplinary studies). The Career Counselor/Advisor will also support a distinguishable community that will benefit from equity focused career advising and guidance (e.g., students with disabilities, veterans, Native American students, etc).

Major duties and responsibilities:
  • Serve as a career counselor/advisor in a centralized comprehensive center to students and alumni.
  • Counsel students and alumni via one-to-one sessions on complex career issues and individual career development plans that may include critiquing resumes, cover letters, other job search correspondence, and practicing interviewing skills, as needed.
  • Create, schedule, and navigate counseling appointments through caseload management software (e.g., EAB/Navigate), with assistance from the Career Center administrative team.
  • Provide career focused education and career readiness advising related to a specific DEI caseload and serve as a liaison to the program or center that would overarchingly support that caseload (e.g., Veteran students, Undocumented students, students with Disabilities, American Indian Students, African American students, Latinx students, Southeast Asian students, etc.).
  • Meet with various stakeholders and community members related to the counseling/advising needs of the assigned needs of DEI caseload.
  • Serve as an expert regarding traditional resumes, co-curricular resumes, curriculum vitae, cover letters, thank-you letters, statements of purpose formats and related professional communication content, as needed.
  • Provide guidance regarding experiential learning experiences such as internships, externships, job shadowing, and service learning, as needed.
  • Provide guidance regarding the job search process and various strategies that enable students to take active responsibility for their career decisions, as needed.
  • Equip students and alumni with the tools necessary to make career plans and understand the work world by facilitating awareness of their work-related strengths, interests, and values.
  • Assess and evaluate students' and alumni's level of self-awareness as it pertains to their career development, as needed.
  • Prepare students and alumni for finding suitable employment by enhancing their job search skills and capacity to express the relevance of strengths to employers, including assisting with job/internship search and application material preparation as needed.
  • Communicate and partner with other staff (e.g., Employee Relations Specialist) on identifying employers salient to student caseloads.
  • Guide students and alumni in their preparation of graduate and professional school planning, as needed.
  • Administer and interpret career assessments (including, but not limited to Gallup StrengthsFinder and the Myers Briggs Inventory) to enable career decision making for students and alumni, as needed.
  • Support students and alumni at career events through experiences such as mock interviews and development of an "elevator pitch, and soft skills development, as needed.
  • Aide in the preparation of job/internship interviews by conducting mock interviews and providing tutorials on how to use the Career Center online technology platforms (e.g., Big Interview) for interview practice.
  • Advises students on matters related to educational success at CSUSB and make referrals to academic advising or to departments and other programs, as needed.
  • Promote job/internship opportunities, events, services, resources, and funding opportunities during appointments and drop-in sessions
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience
  • Three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience.
  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.
  • A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience.
  • A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

Required Qualifications
  • Highly effective interpersonal communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of standard office software such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Applicant must be highly communicative, and have the ability to engage with students, staff, faculty, and local and regional communities regarding Career readiness education.
  • Candidates also must have presentation and programming experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Three years of professional experience preferably in the areas of career counseling, internship coordination, or academic advising.
  • Experience with assessment of student learning and student success.
  • Experience working with NACELink/Handshake Qualtrics, Blackboard or other project management and student contact software that will be utilized in this position.
  • Master's degree in counseling, sociology, psychology, or business administration.


Compensation and Benefits:

Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,025 per month

Classification Salary Range: $5,025 - $7,159 per month

The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 14 paid holidays a year. Schedule: Monday- Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm, weekends and evenings may be required

Background Check

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. Drivers License Check

Possession of a valid Driver's License is required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.

Mandated Reporter

The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
