General Description:

Under general supervision, performs accounting work involved in the maintenance of financial records; and to do related work as required.

Examples of Duties

Essential Functions:

  • Performs a variety of professional accounting duties supporting District-wide operations, including preparing journal entries, posting entries related to the general ledger, maintaining subsidiary ledgers, reconciling account balances, and transferring funds
  • Assists with the monthly and year-end closing process and accompanying financial reports.
  • Provides assistance in the development, review and validation of the annual District budget; create a variety of spreadsheets, documents, and graphs
  • Prepares various monthly, periodic, and annual financial and statistical reports and account summaries
  • Performs the financial administration and reporting of assigned federal and state grants, which includes establishing grants in the financial system, preparing and reviewing budgets and budget adjustments, evaluating grant fiscal compliance matters, and monitoring spending and assisting in accurate and timely reimbursements
  • Provides information on the technical and functional work of accounts receivable, accounts payable and categorical programs
  • Assists with treasury related functions; monitors cash balances for appropriate funds; performs bank transfers and wires; reviews bank analysis statements, investments, and trustee statements
  • Analyzes and prepares budget adjustments
  • Assists in the establishment of formal accounting policies and procedures
  • Maintains compliance with federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations by studying existing and new legislation, enforcing adherence to requirements, and advising management on needed action
  • Maintains financial security by following and establishing appropriate internal controls
  • Participate in the review, development, and implementation of accounting systems, recommended best practices and procedures; recommend changes in the aforementioned areas
  • Answers questions and provides information to District staff regarding accounting policies and procedures
  • Investigates complaints and recommends corrective action as necessary to resolve complaints
  • Assists with internal audit related functions
  • Other related duties as assigned

Knowledge of:
  • Generally accepted accounting principles and theories
  • Financial statements and reports
  • Accounting ledgers and journals
  • Computer technology related to accounting systems

Ability to:
  • Prepare basic financial statements and reports
  • Perform an internal audit
  • Review and analyze financial information
  • Maintain routine accounting data in appropriate ledgers and journals
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationship with those contacted in the course of work
  • Promote and incorporate culturally affirming DEIA and anti-racist principles to nurture and create a respectful, inclusive, and equitable learning and work environment. In conducting their duties, staff members shall respect and acknowledge the diversity of students and colleagues.


Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree AND two (2) years of applicable experience
OR
  • Associate's degree AND five (5) years of applicable experience
OR
  • The equivalent education and experience
    AND
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students
