ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Northeastern University is pleased to announce an Open Rank Research Faculty position in Network Science. The Research Faculty will be a core member of the Network Science Institute, and appointed in the Bouve College of Health Sciences. The Research Faculty will be responsible for building an independent research program and participate in the Institute's research and mentorship efforts. This position is intended to support transition into research independence. It is expected therefore to gradually move from fully, hard-funded support to a salary largely funded through soft-funded, external awards over the course of 3 years. The Research Faculty will have the opportunity to participate in the doctoral student admissions process and supervise students in the network science doctoral program. Research focus should be aligned and/or synergistic with the Institute's and the Bouve College of Health Sciences current research programs, particularly the ones in the fields of network science, infectious disease dynamics, and computational epidemiology.

Successful applicants will have an expertise in network science, with relevant publications and a track record obtaining extramural funds. Applicants should have a strong understanding of the mathematical, statistical, and theoretical tools used to study complex networks, and ability to process and analyze datasets that represent complex dynamical systems. Candidates should be familiar with statistical inference, network modeling, and machine learning techniques and have fluency in the common scientific programming languages, such as Python, R, Julia, Matlab.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop an independent research program centered around network science, complexity science, infectious disease dynamics, and computational epidemiology, in applied or theoretical topics relevant to Network Science Institute.
  • Gradually forge the way to research independence, moving from full support to a salary primarily funded through external awards over the course of 3 years. The initial term of this renewable appointment may not exceed three years from the date of hiring. The expectation is that this role will be supported by external funding by that time. If the Research Faculty receives external salary support during the initial three-year period, an amount equal to the externally received salary may be applied to the salary after this period. Such funds may be carried forward for up to five years.
  • Publish research findings in high-impact peer-reviewed journals, and present research at conferences and workshops.
  • Prepare grant proposals, obtain sponsored funds for research.
  • Supervise post-docs, and graduate students; provide mentorship and training opportunities.
  • Present research and participate on hiring and strategic committees, as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • PhD or another terminal degree in network science, biological, or physical science field by the appointment start date.
  • Demonstrated track record of scholarly achievement in computational epidemiology and infectious disease dynamics, with commensurate publication and research funding history.
  • Ability to work effectively within interdisciplinary research teams and build relationships with external partners.
  • Excellent communication skills across diverse audiences and settings.

HOW TO APPLY:

Interested candidates should submit the following:
