Priest Chaplain - Department of Mission and Pastoral Care - Georgetown University
The Department of Mission and Pastoral Care provides spiritual and emotional support to patients, families and staff through sacramental and liturgical ministries as well as spiritual presence and conversation. An interfaith team of chaplains and volunteers serves people of every religious affiliation who are receiving inpatient or outpatient care at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital (MGUH), whose mission is to provide physical and spiritual comfort to patients and families in the Jesuit tradition of cura personalis - caring for the whole person.
The Priest Chaplain provides sacramental and liturgical ministry to the MGUH community in collaboration with the director of the department. In exercising sacramental and liturgical ministry, the priest chaplain offers to the patients, their surrogates, and MGUH Associates pastoral, spiritual, and emotional support. Sacramental ministry is the celebration of the sacraments according to the Rite of the Roman Catholic Church; and liturgical ministry is presiding at the celebration of the Holy Mass according to the norms of the Roman Catholic Church.
The exercise of priestly ministry promotes the Catholic Identity of MGUH, the Ignatian traditions of cura personalis and "women and men for others," and the SPIRIT Values of MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. Duties include but are not limited to:
Sacramental and Pastoral Care
Provides sacramental and liturgical ministry to the patients, their caregivers, and Associates of MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. These two ministries are the foundation of providing pastoral, spiritual, and emotional support within the context of the hospital's Catholic Identity, the Ignatian tradition of cura personalis, and the SPIRIT Values of MGUH. Duties include making appropriate spiritual assessments, documenting visitations in the electronic medical record, and coordinating pastoral requests as required.
Pastoral and Sacramental On-Call
Provides 24-hour on-call pastoral care throughout the hospital on a rotational basis as assigned - for example, providing appropriate pastoral responses or ministry to all emergencies, codes, deaths; and sacramental ministry to Roman Catholic patients.
Religious Services
- Presides at Roman Catholic religious services for patients, caregivers, and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital Associates 0 including conducting Memorial Services and funerals in the community, when requested
- Trains and coordinates Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion.
Training and Education
- Provides didactics as requested
- Provides field supervision for ministry students under the direction of the Clinical Coordinator for Pastoral Education
Administration
- Attends all required MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and department meetings and events
- Serves as a member of the interdisciplinary team on assigned units or service lines
Requirements
- Master of Divinity degree or equivalent
- In Good Standing as a Priest of the Roman Catholic Church
- Permission of his bishop - or if he is a member of a religious congregation, his provincial or superior and approval by the Archdiocese of Washington to exercise his priestly faculties
Preferred Qualification
Certification by an accrediting association, such as the National Association of Catholic Chaplains or the Association of Professional Chaplain [If no certification, then completion of two (2) units of Clinical Pastoral Education from an Association of Clinical Pastoral Education accredited training program]
Pay Range:
The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$47,586.00 - $87,558.13
Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
